Oslo to New York // Departure Day

Our wooden boat «Fram Jr.» ready for adventure after four days of sanding, soaking and painting. We now head 200nm south-west towards NYC. As we left Martha’s Vineyard later in the day than planned – first port is the small Island Cuttyhunk – some 30 nm westwards. With favourable tide and currents, flat waters no wind – but dense fog we had a great start in high spirit…

…as we entered the protected harbour of Cuttyhunk the numerous and scattered wooden poles and moorings revealed themselves gradually as ghosts one after the other out of the fog as we glide towards the port. At first it seemed as a deserted island with no signs of life. This island which is busy during the summer hosts only 12 people this time of year. We had been given a number to call from the girl in the sail loft of the Marine Railway – the phone on the other end was answered quickly and a few minutes later we saw a gold cart approaching. All our gear was then taken up to a charming house where we would spend the night. Before we left Martha’s Vineyard we had been stacking up some thick Rib Eyes and were out of our knickerbockers with happiness to find a big American BBQ on the porch. A kilo or two heavier we crawled into our sleeping bags and dozed off. Off Season is our season!
