SPRING ARRIVALS

THE CHUKKA CAPSULE

April 14 marks exactly 100 years since the airship Norge moored to the mast at Ekeberg in Oslo during its historic journey toward the Arctic.
Led by Roald Amundsen, the expedition continued north and would go on to become the first documented human presence at the North Pole, reaching it on May 12, 1926. It also marked the first time any aircraft crossed the Arctic from Europe to America.
While earlier expeditions were once believed to have reached the Pole, later analysis cast doubt on their claims. With 16 men on board, the Norge expedition remains the first undisputed journey to the North Pole.
