Atlantic Drifting

Few Summer Time activities invigorate the soul and body like sailing. It’s a sport which seems to have weathered the advent of motorized ski-dos and high tech distractions—at least for those who are inclined to seek it. A sport so simple and yet so magical it’s difficult to capture in words—flying across water by using the wind. It seems like a thing of fiction.

In need of some Summer Time Adventure, we headed east to our friends at Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway in Vineyard  Haven, Massachusetts. Eliza a 30’ wooden yawl made by Gannon and Benjamin and Caribou, a beautiful old lobster boat would be our room and board for the six of us. Will McCullough and Annabel Armstrong would be our Captains and gracious hosts. Greta Garschagen and Henry Hunt came up from New York. And Alex Beal and Christian Lovenskiold, by way of Boulder, Colorado, would round out the crew making it an even six.

Greta, at the Helm—eyes on the sails.
Annabel, undoubtable fixing something of great importance.
Field Notes: JC preparing breakfast for the crew at anchor. As always, Eggs, Beacon, and coffee.

The Six of us set off, heading North from Vinyard Heaven with the help of our trusty canine companion, Hector. With a good breeze out of the East we coasted along hooting and hollering our way out of the harbor. Our goal was to make it to Tarpaulin Cove on Naushon Island, South West of Vinyard Haven, MA. We would drop anchor and raft up for the night. With plenty of food and drink on board, we were in for a good night at anchor.

Hector, suspiciously looking back— Eliza and Caribou rafted together for the night.
